Camouflage Tricks

If you wear make-up, a low-key, natural look is always flattering and makes the most of a fresh complexion. A style with startling details and bright colours won't do this.

Pick a foundation tone a shade paler than the skin on your neck and a translucent powder. Stay away from pink blusher shades; those in the apricot range are more natural.

With your eye make-up, avoid hard colours - they will compete with the sparkle in your eyes - choose soft sludgy colours instead. A natural shade of lipstick will complete the effect.

There are always ways to camouflage any bad points, or at least to minimise their effects.

Wrinkles

If your skin becomes direr than usual, fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet will look more obvious. Heavy foundations will accentuate them, so choose the finest texture foundation you can get, and use a fine, translucent powder.

High Colour

Increased blood supply can give you a permanently flushed look. To reduce this slightly, apply a matt beige foundation containing quite a lot of pigment but with no hint of pink in it.

With your fingertips, stipple some onto the area of the cheeks where it's needed. Allow it to dry and then apply a thin layer of your usual foundation on top and finish with a colourless powder.

This method is also good for concealing spider veins or other red veins on the cheeks that become prominent.

Extra-Greasy Skin

For greasy patches of skin, use a water-based moisturiser and oil-free foundation with translucent powder.

Extra-Dry Skin

To deal with dry patches of skin, first apply a thin lotion that's absorbed by the skin within seconds, and on top apply a thicker kind that acts as a barrier to water loss.

Covering the skin with a fine layer of suitable make-up also helps to slow down water loss.

However if your face is flaking, you wont be able to camouflage it, so abandon all make-up and moisturise your skin thoroughly for a few days. Consult your doctor if the flakiness in accompanied by redness.

Puffiness

It is most noticeable under the chin but can be camouflaged by shading a little brown blusher beneath the jawbone and either side of the neck. Apply blusher at the temples to draw attention to the eyes.

Dark Circles

Apply a thin layer of foundation. When dry, stipple over the dark areas with an under-eye cover-up cream.

Leave for a couple of minutes to set, then cover with another thin layer of foundation, blending carefully. Dust with colourless powder.

Acne

If you normally suffer from pimples of blackheads, you may find that they disappear. The fluctuation of hormones may, conversely, cause you to develop acne on the face or back for the first time.

This is different from ordinary acne so don't treat it with the usual proprietary preparations. Talk to your doctor if you are worried - it will usually have vanished by the second trimester.

To mask unsightly acne, stipple concealer or a little extra foundation over the area with your fingers. Finish with foundation and then dust with colourless powder.

Never squeeze a spot; this will spread germs into the deeper layer of the skin.
